Frozen Dessert Vs. Ice Creams. Are they both Same?
Summer or winter, rainy day or hot humid climate, weekday or weekend nothing really matters when you have Ice cream craving. How do you describe Ice creams, few of the adjectives to describe Ice cream are
Refreshing • Delicious • Delightful • Yummy • Delectable • Creamy Rich • Scrumptious • Tasty • Irresistible • Rewarding • Dessert
Anything which is sweet, melts and tastes great are always Ice cream for me for decades till the day got this shocking truth.
What is Ice Cream?
As per Wiki - Ice cream is a sweetened frozen food typically eaten as a snack or dessert. It is usually made from dairy products, such as milk and cream, and often combined with fruits or other ingredients and flavours. It is typically sweetened with sucrose, corn syrup, cane sugar, beet sugar, and / or other sweeteners.
What is Frozen Dessert?
Frozen dessert is not much different from Ice cream in many ways. Preparation process of frozen dessert are similar to Ice creams. Taste and texture also are similar to Ice creams. Vegetable Oils are used in preparation of Frozen desserts. In many countris including India dessert made out of vegetable oil cannot be labeled as Ice creams.
Frozen dessert manufactures defend that frozen desert is not bad for health. But there seems to be a lot of hesitation in displaying that in the packaging.
In first casual glance even the expert will misread package labes to be Ice cream.
Vegetable Oil fat is not good for our health on longer run when compared to fat derived from dairy products.
Why vegetable Oil is used in Frozen Dessert?
Ignoring the reasons and arguments made by the manufactures of frozen desserts a simple investigation gives more reason to belive frozen dessert is not good for health.
Vegetable oil is cheaper than milk or dairy fat.
Vegetable Oil is a generic name and current regulation does not mandate to mention which vegetable oil. Vegetable oil can be a mix of many vegetable oil and frozen dessert manufactures may use this for their benefits.
Manufactures do not pass on this price advantage of using vegetable oil becaue it might place their product inferior to Ice creams.
Drawbacks of using vegetable fat based ice cream
Using vegetable oil is unhealthy due to its cholesterol increasing effect
Unless government regulators involve in regulating the Ice cream package labelling many more are going to be tricked to eat frozen desserts as Ice creams.
