Medical Colleges Teaching Doctors to Cook
“I Want to Help My Patients Not Need My Services” Cardiologist Dr. Jim Fox quoted. You cannot see a better mission statement for a doctor or hospital.
Medical schools across America have either adopted cooking program or adding "Teach Doctors to Cook " in to their curriculum. Without good knowledge of food a doctors graduation seems incomplete.
Intention of this course is not to make doctors into dieticians or a nutritionist. 90% of todays disease are due to poor eating habbits and in country like india visiting a nutritianist is a luxury. Offordability is an issue.
Physicians talk about nutrition and diet all the time, but they don't talk about it in a way that communicates change to their patients. These cooking programs attempts to change that.
Beginning of this change has started through Tulane University School of Medicine in New Orleans, they have started thinking in right direction.
Educating Doctors in India
With current trend continuing, by year 2015, 1 in 3 adults will be diabetic in India. Though doctors battle this from front line, unfortunately battle is over before it starts.
Billions of dollars are spent in building diabetic foundations, clinics and ad-campaigns promoting treatments and selling diabetic related products. Spend a fraction of that budget to educate people on proper intake of food. We will witness a steady and gradual fall in diabetic patient and obesity issues. This is not going to happen anytime soon.
Future of Medicine is Food
Strategically, students of medical colleges are the right starting point to start this revolution. Medical Students should be thought about food, Ingredients and cooking. If a doctor advises on nutrition chances are higher that people may listen.
Marriage between chef and doctor is a marriage between two faith. Medical students should have a commitment for healthy food.
